John’s Working Life
John’s first job was at the Stirling Abattoir — a role he discovered very quickly wasn’t for him. He left soon after, eager to find something that suited him better.
He then moved on to the Cork and Seal factory. This wasn’t a dream job either, but it had a purpose: he was determined to save for his wedding, and this work helped him do exactly that.
After marrying, John took on a completely different challenge: working on tower cranes. This job took him all over Britain, travelling from site to site for around five years. It was demanding work, but it gave him experiences and stories he carried with him for the rest of his life.
Between major roles, John wasn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and do whatever was needed. He worked as a bricklayer’s mate, a labourer, and even a window cleaner — always willing to graft and always dependable.
Eventually, he moved back home to be closer to his family. That’s when he found the job he truly loved: lorry driving. He started at Parkhead and later moved to Jewsons, where he became a familiar and well‑liked face. Driving gave him a sense of freedom, purpose, and pride, and he stayed in that role for the rest of his life.
