In Loving Memory of John McKay

1959 – 2013

John McKay — Johnny to his family and “Cocky” to his friends — passed away suddenly on 1 July 2013 at the age of 54. Born to Bill and Jane McKay, he was the fourth of five children and the cherished first son.

Growing up in the Cornton, John was surrounded by a tight-knit circle of friends: Jim, Les, Colin, and Wee Nick. His confidence, sharp humour, and ever-present sunglasses became part of his signature charm, reflecting the easygoing, fun-loving spirit everyone knew him for.

At twenty-one, John married Yvonne, and together they welcomed two daughters, Cheryl and Holly. Although their paths later diverged, their friendship endured, and they remained an important part of each other’s lives. John was a devoted father and a proud grandfather to Sayra, who was just seven when he passed.

Forever young at heart, John embodied the spirit of “Peter Pan” — living life with laughter, loyalty, and an open heart. His close friend John Stewart (“Stew”) honours that spirit every year with “Shades Day,” when family and friends don sunglasses and share photos in celebration of John’s life. It’s a day filled with smiles, stories, and the warmth he brought into the world.

John’s light, humour, and love continue to live on in the memories of all who knew him. Forever loved. Never forgotten.
